My name is Lisa, I was taught sign language when I was 9 years old, although this was in the context of communicating with the hard of hearing and profoundly deaf children this early grounding in the language convinced me of the merits of children, both hearing and non hearing, learning this language.  I trained as a family day carer and began to use baby sign with the children in my care.  When my daughter Katie was born I signed to her. From 6 months Katie was able to sign a staggering array of signs from ‘milk’, to 'giraffe' and on and on we progressed. Katie’s repertoire of sign increasing phenomally and consequently her understanding of vocabulary growing larger.
